But why exactly does the river turn blood red? Does the Brahma Putra River near the Kamakya Temple really turn red representing the goddess Parvati’s menstrual cycle?

Kamakya Devi is famous as the bleeding goddess. The legendary womb and yoni of Shakti are supposedly installed in the Garbha-Grihya of the temple.

It is believed that in the month of Ashaar, meaning June, the goddess bleeds or menstruates. The Kamakya turns becomes red during this time.

The temple then remains closed for three days. And the water which became is distributed among the devotees of Kamakya.

There is no scientific proof that why the blood becomes red. Some people say that the priest pours in the door into the water. There is an interesting story which is associated with the origin of Kamakya Mandir.

History of the Kamakya Temple

As the legend goes, Devi Shakti fought with her husband Lord Shiva and attended her father’s great Yagya without Shiva’s approval. It is a custom to pay respect to the mighty Lord Shiva before the start of a Yagya.

But Shiva was not invited and Shakti’s father, Daksha, refused to pay respect to him. Unable to bear the insult, Devi Shakti committed suicide by burning herself into the fire of Yagya.

Furious, Lord Shiva placed Devi Shakti’s body on his shoulders and began his thunders. The dance of destruction. Lord Vishnu, who wanted to stop Lord Shiva from destroying everything; cut Devi Shakti’s body with his Sudarshan Chakra.

Her 108 body parts that fell are called the Shakti Pete, and temples are set in these places for the Devi Shakti. Lord Vishnu did this because it was the command of Brahmaswarupini Bhagwati Mahakali.

It is believed that the Kamakya temple is set in the place where Shakti’s womb and Yoni fell.

The first reason is that the soil of this area is rich in iron content naturally.

The second reason may be that the shrine of Kamakya is situated in the mountains.

The chemical name of cinnabar is mercury sulphide and it has a blood red color which gives it a red color.

Moreover, in the Kamakya temple, rock pieces are usually sold in the name of Kamakya or Kamiya Sindhu.

It is often said that this red color Sindhu has the immensibility to control the mind power. So it is also called the Vashi Karan Sindhu.

This Sindhu is utilized for making spiritual items, the items that protect from enemies and evil souls. It is also used for resolving the problems of black magic.

Though these reasons are sufficient to explain why the color is red. But these facts are never able to explain why only for three days the Brahma Putra river gets red.

Argument of becomes red water

Furthermore, why only in the month of June? Why not for the whole year? Because if the deposits of cinnabar and soil is rich in iron content, then Brahma Putra river which is through the Kamakya temple should always be red in color.

But it is not so. It is believed that it is truly the magic of goddess Kamakya which is responsible for the red color of the river.

Some people say that the groundwater is red all the time. And the river is not flooding, the cinnabar deposits settle down and the water is clear.

But when the flooding starts, all that accumulated deposit and cinnabar becomes really prominent. That is called Ambuvachi and celebrated as the Devi Shakti’s festival.
