Biblical counseling is about solving people’s problems or helps the person to get out from the problem. It is covering the cause of their problems and then applying biblical principles to those causes.

1. Understand the counselee’s problem

“Recently I spoke with a woman who was sure God had stopped loving her”. She felt desperately insecure and willing to die. I request her to read Roman 8:32, 33.  She read and wept. The passage says “while I was yet a sinner, spiritually dead and hostile to God, he loved me sought me out.”  People need that kind of love. People desperately need to be loved in this kind of situation.

2. Help the counselee to understand the black spot

To repair a car, mechanic repair the car according to the manual book to the particular problem. But people cannot treat that way. Biblical counselor is trying to help the whole person in order to solve a single problem.

Crisis is the time when usual problem-solving abilities stops to function and tensions arise, a person who unable to recognize the problem. So Bible helps the person so understand his/her black spot. In Luke 18: 18-30, a rich man called Jesus as “Good Master” and then asked for eternal life. Perhaps he was not satisfied with his present condition.

Thus he came to Jesus for better suggestion.  But Jesus challenged his thinking by saying “Why you call me good? Indirectly Jesus told him “I am not ok and you are also not ok” so find out your problem. And at the end Jesus exposed his problem that is worship of wealth.

3. Use Bible references for consolation

Think about how you’ll sense in case you were in the counselee’s role. There are many examples in which Jesus appeared with full care; and he positioned himself in their place; and intentionally tried to experience what they were feeling. There are numerous Bible references, for examples certainly the Psalms have been deeply meaningful (psalm 23:1, 4). Now not simplest Psalm however Lament, Job, Isaiah, Jeremiah and so on. Are the books of wish, agree with, assurance, and attraction to the Lord in the time of crisis.

Biblical change cannot take place without hope– especially in the difficult situation. People who had life crushing experiences like divorce, a death, loss of a job need hope. The role of hope in the process of elevation cannot be underestimated. Consider what bible says about hope. For example Hope produces determination (Rom. 8: 24-25), Jesus Christ who is our hope (I Tim. 1:1). Joseph and Job are two events in the Old Testament which is speaking about the true hope.

5. Providing Instruction through biblical counseling

When we want to help people to be changed; we must be skilled in biblical counseling instruction. There are three kinds of instructions: (1) it must be biblically based (2) it must be biblically accurate (3) it must be biblically appropriate. When we instruct our counselees from Scripture, make sure it provides a challenge to the counselees, as Jesus did to the Samaritan Woman, who received a new life.

6. Model counselor “Jesus” in the midst of crisis

Surely, the greatest counselor of all instances became our Lord Jesus Christ. Prophet Isaiah instructed us, “His call will be known as incredible counselor” (9:6) and that upon Him might relaxation “the spirit of expertise and information, the spirit of counsel and strength” (11:2). His extreme compassion was for all. The book of Matthew tells us that “seeing the multitude, he felt compassion for them” (9:36). In John 11:35, while Jesus noticed Mary’s grief over the dying of Lazarus “He wept”. He did not just take a look at. However, He confirmed the compassion that each counselor needs. If we’re to be powerful counselors, we should have this form of compassion.
